The Pozzi

The tour begins in the courtyard and goes straight through a narrow door into the ground-floor prison cells — damp, dark, at water level. Each cell holds a wooden cot, a small shelf for the handful of belongings a prisoner was permitted, and a lidded wooden bucket. Graffiti and drawings scratched into the walls are still legible.

Offices of the Ducal Notary and the Deputato alla Segreta

Up a narrow staircase to the working offices of the two officials responsible for the Republic's confidential paperwork. The Deputato alla Segreta answered directly to the Council of Ten.

Office of the Great Chancellor

The most senior position a Venetian commoner could hold. Functionally the Republic's central archive — every state document passed through here.

Chamber of the Secret Chancellory

Lined with decorated cabinets that once held the public records and the classified files of most Venetian magistracies. This is the literal secret archive the tour is named for.

The Torture Chamber

Interrogations were conducted here. The standard method was the rope: the accused was suspended by the arms, tied behind the back. Venice began phasing out judicial torture from the 17th century, earlier than most of Europe — a detail your guide will place in context.

Piombi Prisons

Named for the lead (piombo) roof covering directly overhead, which made them brutal in summer. These cells were reserved for prisoners of the Council of Ten, usually political cases. Casanova was held here and described them in detail. Both of his cells have been reconstructed and both are on the tour.

The attic

You pass directly beneath the roof structure — the raw carpentry holding up the palace, seen by almost nobody.

Chamber of the Inquisitors

The Inquisitors of State were established in 1539 to protect state secrets and operated with sweeping authority and near-total confidentiality. The ceiling is by Tintoretto, painted in 1566–67.

Chamber of the Three Head Magistrates

The tour ends where the Council of Ten's trials were prepared. A concealed passage runs from this room directly into the Council of Ten's own chamber — the shortest distance in Venice between an accusation and a verdict.
