History Of St Mark's Square

St Mark's Square is almost as old as Venice. The construction of Basilica di San Marco, the centerpiece of St Mark's Square, began in the 9th century and was completed in the 11th century.

The other landmark buildings and monuments were added over centuries to make St Mark's Square a center of attraction. The whole area used to be the center of political and religious power in Venice centuries back but was much smaller. Over time it expanded and slowly became a symbol of the city's heritage.
