First floor: Evolution of Venetian lace

Ascending to the first floor, the exhibition unfolds across four thematic rooms, each highlighting a distinct era in lace-making:

• 16th Century origins – Early lace samples showcasing geometric and floral patterns, reflecting the Renaissance's influence on textile art.
• 17th–18th Century flourishing – Intricate designs demonstrating the peak of lace's popularity among European nobility.
• 19th–20th Century revival – Pieces illustrating the resurgence of lace-making, including works from the Burano Lace School era.
• Burano Lace School archive – Documents, photographs, and patterns from the school that operated from 1872 to 1970, preserving the island's lace heritage.

The Burano Lace Museum is set within the Palazzo del Podestà di Torcello, a graceful example of Venetian civic architecture featuring pastel-colored façades, arched windows, and high wooden-beamed ceilings.
